When I try to repair an item with the hammer I have to look (Try) throughout the structure until I find a spot that works. This sucks!!!

The repair mechanic is pretty non-functional. I hunt and hunt for the trigger point where the Simple Hammer (in my case) will effect a repair. Most recently the knive caused a great deal of damage when trying to skin a boar that fell ON the stairs into a building. Repairing structures in this case would leave a better opinion.
Similar issue in offline mode. Most of the time the hammer isn't making contact with the item I'm trying to repair. So far I'm struggling with the following - Crude structures, shelving (not sure how they got damaged), plant boxes, and all but the fancy fancy storage box.
